What is Coiled Tubing?

Coiled tubing (CT) is a steel pipe that is many kilometers long and coiled on a large diameter drum. It is made up of multiple sections of beveled steel strips that are rolled, shaped, and welded together.  This type of pipe has excellent strength, toughness, and continuity, and it may replace conventional oil pipelines in a variety of applications.
 
During World War II, the Allies solved the problem of cross-sea military oil delivery by constructing 17 special metal pipelines.  This method was used to repair oil wells in the early 1960s, paving the way for coiled tubing in the oil industry.

Which is better: carbon steel or titanium alloy coiled tubing?
Titanium alloy coiled tubing offers great strength, low density, strong corrosion resistance, a long fatigue life, and excellent heat resistance.
However, the buying cost of carbon steel coiled tubing is lower.
 
Applications of Coiled Tubing
The main aspect of continuous tubing applications is that they require frequent bending and distortion, which is classified as plastic deformation.
 
Continuous tubing is appropriate for well repair, logging, drilling, completion, and production increase operations in oil and gas well drilling and production.
 
  • Well repair: primarily used for sand washing, drilling, and grinding operations, gas lift induced spraying, salvage, drainage, high-condensate oil plugging, wax removal, ice plugging, and so on.
  • Drilling: small hole drilling, underbalanced drilling, deepening of ancient wells, side drilling horizontal wells, and so on.
  • Production increase: fixed-point fracturing, multilayer fracturing, homogeneous acid dispersion, and drag acidizing, among others.
