The Difference Between 2205 Stainless Steel and S31803 Stainless Steel
Many people who are not familiar with stainless steel might think that S31803 stainless steel is the same as 2205 stainless steel, assuming that S31803 is the American standard grade and 2205 is the Chinese standard grade. However, this is a common misconception. The emergence of S31803 stainless steel was mainly in the 1970s for use in oil and gas pipelines. However, to improve the phase balance of this steel and avoid the precipitation of harmful phases, S32205 stainless steel pipes were derived from S31803 stainless steel, with the latter having a narrower range. Therefore, when strictly adhering to standards, 2205 stainless steel pipes can replace S31803 stainless steel, but not vice versa. Similarly, the unit price of the latter is slightly lower than that of the former. Our corresponding duplex steel grade is 00Cr22Ni5Mo3N. The differences in element content between the three are as follows:
2205 duplex stainless steel pipe is defined as a stainless steel with a structure composed of equal parts ferrite and austenite in its solid quenching organization, referred to as 2205 stainless steel pipe, also known as 2205 duplex steel pipe. The actual phase ratio is 45-55% ferrite and 55-45% austenite, respectively. The excellent performance of 2205 duplex stainless steel is ensured by the appropriate ratio of the two-phase structure.
2205 duplex stainless steel pipes have excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and good weldability, making them widely used in industries such as petroleum and natural gas, marine engineering, and chemical industry. The length of oil and gas pipelines laid using duplex stainless steel materials in the petroleum and natural gas industry has exceeded 850 km, with the vast majority being 2205 duplex stainless steel seamless steel pipes (some are also S31803 duplex stainless steel pipes and 2507 duplex stainless steel pipes). Due to the strong corrosiveness of the natural gas medium, high-pressure pipelines in the West-East Gas Pipeline Project all use 2205 duplex stainless steel materials.
2205 stainless steel and S31803 stainless steel are actually very closely related. In fact, they are essentially the same material but named differently based on different standards.
2205 stainless steel is a duplex stainless steel grade. Duplex stainless steels are characterized by a two-phase microstructure consisting of both austenitic and ferritic phases. This dual-phase structure gives duplex stainless steels a combination of excellent corrosion resistance and high strength, making them suitable for a wide range of applications, particularly in aggressive environments such as those encountered in the chemical, petrochemical, and marine industries.
S31803 stainless steel is the specific grade designation according to the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standard. This designation refers to the chemical composition of the steel. The "S" stands for stainless, "318" indicates the minimum tensile strength in ksi (thousands of pounds per square inch), and "03" signifies the approximate composition of chromium and molybdenum in the steel.
Therefore, 2205 stainless steel and S31803 stainless steel refer to the same material, with 2205 being a generic term often used in industry and S31803 being the specific designation according to ASTM standards. Both terms can be used interchangeably to describe duplex stainless steel with a similar chemical composition and properties.
